The Club for Growth doesn't get involved in social issues, but I thought comments by the insufferable Sen. Sheila Kuehl in today's LA Times were worthy of public scorn.
The story focused on the four undecided Assemblyman who will decide the fate of Assemblyman Mark Leno's bill legalizing same-sex marriage. One of those waverers is OC Democrat Tom Umberg, who earlier this year admitted to carrying on at least one extra-marital affair.
The oh-so-sensitive Ms. Kuehl commented thus:
Gay rights advocates say they will put up a primary challenge to Umberg if he does not support the measure. Advocates also say that Umberg is not in a strong position to join with those arguing to "preserve the sanctity of traditional marriage," given that he admitted earlier this year to an extramarital affair.
"I try not to be too personal in my assessment," Kuehl said, "but certainly people who live in glass houses shouldn't deny other people houses."
Gee, do you think Kuehl will apply that same to standard to all those pro-same-sex-marriage legislators who justify their positions by extolling the virtues of marriage? Or is it only those extol marriage in the course of opposing gay marriage who qualify as hypocrites according to the Kuehl standard.
Like you said, Senator: people who live in glass houses...
